MOSCOW, October 18 (RIA Novosti) – A large amount of ammunition has been found on the premises of a former military base in southern Russia, a regional law enforcement source told RIA Novosti on Friday.
The arsenal was discovered Thursday in the city of Rostov-on-Don in several crates in a 1.5-meter-deep pit, and included tank and antiaircraft shells, aircraft ammunition and high-explosive bombs, the source said.
The former military base, disbanded in 2010, was an ammunition depot and distribution point for the Southern Military District.
Bomb disposal specialists are currently working at the scene as the ammunition is being loaded into trucks and moved to a destruction facility, the source said, adding it will take up to a week to dispose of it.
The Interior Ministry press center confirmed the discovery of the ammunition arsenal to RIA Novosti.
