MOSCOW, October 20 (R-Sport) – Russian boxer Ruslan Provodnikov won the world championship title over American Mike Alvarado with a technical knockout after the tenth round of a fight for the World Boxing Organization (WBO).
During the fight on Saturday night in Denver, Colorado, Provodnikov – nicknamed the “Siberian Rocky” by media – started on the offensive, landing more punches than his opponent and countering Alvarado’s uppercuts with alternating hooks and jabs.
The contest seemed even until the eighth round, when the Russian boxer managed to knock down Alvarado twice, badly injuring him. After dominating the next two rounds, Provodnikov scored the WBO junior welterweight championship when the referee called an end to the fight after the tenth round.
The fight was the second WBO world title attempt for Provodnikov, who lost the title by split decision to defending American champion Timothy Bradley in March.
