MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Space Defense Forces will hold an exercise with S-300 Favorit missile systems in the Southern Military District, a Defense Ministry spokesman said Wednesday.
The two-day exercise, involving about 700 servicemen, over 50 combat vehicles and more than 20 warplanes, will begin on Thursday in the southern Astrakhan Region, Col. Igor Gorbul said.
In the course of the exercise, S-300 missiles will be launched at high- and low-altitude targets flying at various speeds, he said, adding that the exercise scenario was developed by factoring in the experience of local wars.
The Favorit surface-to-air missile system is designed to protect fixed sites against missile and air attacks. It can detect targets at ranges of up to 300 kilometers and is comprised of a command post, up to six missile carriers and an illumination-and-guidance radar vehicle.
