Viktor Cherepkov, a former mayor of the Russian far eastern city of Vladivostok, was hospitalized after being attacked in Moscow, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) — Viktor Cherepkov, a former mayor of the Russian far eastern city of Vladivostok, was hospitalized after being attacked in Moscow, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

The spokesman said the incident took place late on Monday night “when an unknown individual attacked Cherepkov in the northwest of Moscow and hit him several times.”

He added that Cherepkov was to taken to a hospital with various injuries, while police launched an investigation into the attack.

Cherepkov served as the mayor of Vladivostok in 1993-1994 and in 1996-1998. This year he ran again for the post of Vladivostok’s mayor but finished second in the election losing the post to Igor Pushkaryov.
