WASHINGTON, October 24 (RIA Novosti) – A woman from Chicago has triumphed over a host of young ethnic Ukrainian women in the United States to win the Miss Ukrainian Diaspora 2013 beauty contest, ChicagoNow.com has reported.
Solomia Krun defeated 18 other competitors from across the US in a “classy contest” intended to “popularize and preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage throughout the world and to support the Ukrainian community in Chicago,” according to ChicagoNow.com.
Indeed so classy is the Miss Ukrainian Diaspora contest that instead of donning bikinis, the contestants modeled traditional Ukrainian costumes, including antique garments from the 19th century the website reported Wednesday.
In addition to the beauty pageant, the event held last Sunday in Chicago also featured performances by Ukrainian entertainers including 2004 Eurovision Song Contest winner Ruslana and the renowned violinist Vasyl Popadiuk.
