WARSAW, October 28 (RIA Novosti) – Poland's first post-Communist prime minister, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, has died at the age of 86, local media reported Monday.
Mazowiecki was designated head of government in August 1989 by President Wojciech Jaruzelski in an appointment that spelled the end of authoritarian socialist rule in Poland. He served as prime minister until January 1991.
Mazowiecki, who had been a long-time Solidarity activist before being named prime minister, served in recent years as a foreign affairs adviser to current President Bronislaw Komorowski.
