MOSCOW, October 28 (RIA Novosti) – Russia has given tentative approval to a deal with Kazakhstan to merge air defense capabilities as part of a greater defense network for ex-Soviet republics, the Russian government said in a statement.
The deal, to establish legal principles for the air defense system, is expected to be approved by Russian President Vladimir Putin and then be ratified by the country’s lower house of parliament.
The deal was initially signed on January 30 in Kazakhstan during a meeting between the defense ministers of Russia and Kazakhstan.
Russia and Kazakhstan already enjoy close economic ties as part of a Moscow-led Customs Union that also includes Belarus.
