Ukraine’s consumer rights watchdog said Wednesday it will conduct checks in December on factories of the country’s biggest candymaker, which has been hit by a Russian embargo of its products since summer.

KIEV, November 13 (RIA Novosti) – Ukraine’s consumer rights watchdog said Wednesday it will conduct checks in December on factories of the country’s biggest candymaker, which has been hit by a Russian embargo of its products since summer.

Moscow banned imports from Roshen in late July, saying that the analyzed product samples failed to comply with sanitary regulations.
Kiev has asked Russia to provide a detailed report on the checks through the World Trade Organization.

Ukraine’s consumer watchdog chief Serhiy Orekhov said authorities had no outstanding claims against the quality of Roshen products sold on domestic market.

Orekhov said he hoped the upcoming checks would give an unbiased assessment of Roshen's products.

He did not say which factories were to be inspected.

Previous checks carried out by the watchdog at Roshen’s factories after Russia banned the candymaker’s products found no quality problems.

Moscow’s embargo was announced against the backdrop of differences between Ukraine and Russia over Kiev’s decision to slap an import tax on cars, which Russia believes to be harmful to its carmakers.

Russia has been putting pressure on Ukraine to join the Moscow-led Customs Union trade area, which currently includes only Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Ukraine, however, has been reluctant to join the group and hopes instead to sign a series of trade agreements with the European Union later this month.
