MOSCOW, November 14 (RIA Novosti) – Two Russian cargo planes landed in the Philippines on Thursday to deliver 56 tons of meat, fish and sugar to victims of one of the most destructive typhoons on record.
The two Il-76s arrived at a central Cebu province airport, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said in a statement. The planes will take back to Russia a group of 11 tourists fleeing the devastation.
Typhoon Haiyan, known locally as Yolanda, swept across the Philippines late last week, leaving an estimated 660,000 people without homes.
Local officials say some 10,000 people might have been killed in the hardest-hit province, Leyte.
The United Nations said earlier this week that it would send $25 million in aid to the country.
The Philippines has said that a total of 23 countries, including the US and China, have offered humanitarian assistance and financial aid.
