ST. PETERSBURG, November 14 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s Severnaya Verf shipyard on Thursday began construction of a frigate and a reconnaissance ship for the Russian navy.
The Admiral Isakov is the fourth in a series of six Project 22350 (Admiral Gorshkov class) frigates to be delivered by Severnaya Verf under a contract with the Defense Ministry.
The lead ship of the class, the Admiral Gorshkov, is undergoing sea trials while the Admiral Kasatonov and the Admiral Golovko are at various stages of construction at the shipyard.
The Admiral Gorshkov has a displacement of 4,500 tons, a speed of 29 knots, a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 14 knots, and can go 15 days without resupplying.
It has a crew of 210 and an assortment of weaponry, including a 130-mm A-192 gun, a Kashtan close-in weapon system for destroying incoming shells, eight Oniks 3M55 (SS-N-26) anti-ship missiles, the Shtil I (SA-N-12 "Grizzly") medium-range anti-aircraft missile complex, four 533-mm torpedo tubes, RPK-9 Medvedka-VE (SS-N-29) anti-submarine rockets, and 24 Uragan SAM missiles.
It also carries a Ka-27 or Ka-32 helicopter.
The Russian navy said it needs between 20 and 30 of such vessels, which are capable of carrying out long-range strikes, anti-submarine and escort missions in remote areas.
The Ivan Khurs is the second reconnaissance ship of the Project 18280 (Yury Ivanov class) being built for the Russian navy.
Severnaya Verf floated out the lead ship of the class, the Yury Ivanov, on September 30. The vessel is expected to undergo sea and state trials prior to delivery to Russia’s Northern Fleet by the end of next year.
