ST. PETERSBURG, November 22 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has arrived in Geneva on Friday evening to meet with representatives of other nations negotiating with Iran on its nuclear program.
Iran made a new bid this year to resolve the lengthy impasse over its nuclear program, which Western powers claim may be intended to produce nuclear weapons. Iran says it needs the program to provide energy and produce isotopes for medical uses.
Iran and six major world powers – the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany – spoke of a possible breakthrough deal during the previous round of talks in Geneva earlier this month, but an agreement has so far failed to materialize.
