In August 1889, polar explorer Lev Grinevitsky established the town of Novo-Mariinsk in the mouth of the Kazachka River. The town was established by an imperial Russian executive order on setting up the Anadyr territory in the country’s most northeasterly region.
The word “Anadyr” is mentioned in historical chronicles and is also part of other similar words, including “Onandyr,” a river in Chukotka, and “Anadyrsk,” a fort dating to the times of 17th-century Russian polar explorers Semyon Dezhnyov and Kurbat Ivanov.
The city has a rather harsh climate, with winter temperatures dropping to minus 20 degrees Celsius. Summer temperatures barely reach plus 10 C. But due to its proximity to the sea, local winters are much milder than those in other Siberian regions.
The Anadyr port, the largest regional port, links the city with Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Vladivostok, Magadan and other cities. It can annually handle up to 1 million metric tons of cargo.
