Speleotherapy, a form of treatment using the air of disused salt mines and caves, reached Belarus in 1990. The Belarusian city of Soligorsk has a unique underground speleotherapy clinic.
Speleotherapy is based on the unique microclimate: The air 420 meters below the surface is filled with a healthy mist of potassium, sodium and magnesium ions.
The underground treatment facility features a rare combination of layers of red (sylvinite) and white (halite) salts that assist in diluting expectorations and have powerful antibacterial and anti-allergy effects.
The subterranean clinic has wards (sleeping spaces), medical staff examination rooms, halls for therapeutic exercise, relaxation rooms and a Terrainkur – an area for measured walking.
The temperature in the subterranean salt cave is kept constant at around 16 degrees Celsius, as is the humidity, the composition of gases and saturation of the air with negative ions.
The air passes through a labyrinth of over two kilometers and is cleansed of harmful impurities, microbes and allergens. This is why the air in the Soligorsk speleo clinic is cleaner than even the most pristine operating room. The area is also free from electromagnetic radiation.
Patients over 10 years old can undergo treatment at Soligorsk; children under 10 are not allowed into the underground center.
