MOSCOW, December 30 (R-Sport) – The VTB United League basketball match between Volgograd’s Krasny Oktyabr and Tsmoki Minsk was canceled Monday after terror attacks that have killed at least 31 people in the city.
A bomb explosion on a trolleybus in Volgograd on Monday morning killed at least 14 people less than 24 hours after 17 died in an apparently similar attack at the city's railway station.
“The match Krasny Oktyabr – Tsmoki Minsk will be cancelled along with the TV broadcast. We can’t risk people lives holding the event,” Oktyabr’s general manager Artem Panchenko wrote on Twitter.
Other sports and entertainment events are expected to be postponed or canceled after five days of mourning were declared in Volgograd, a city of 1 million that was also the target of a deadly bus blast in October.
Meanwhile, Russian Olympic Committee chief Alexander Zhukov said no extra security measures would be adopted for February’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, which is 690 kilometers (430 miles) from Volgograd.
The VTB league is a nine-country international competition that also determines the Russian champion.
