MOSCOW, January 2 (R-Sport) – Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova made it through to the semi-finals of the Brisbane International semi-finals on Thursday with a hard-fought comeback win over Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.
Number four rated Sharapova beat Kanepi 4:6, 6:3, 6:2 in two hours.
The win sets Sharapova up for a semi-final meet with America’s Serena Williams, the women’s tennis world number one and reigning champion in the competition, which has a million dollar prize fund.
It was Sharapova’s first competition since she pulled out of the US Open in August with a shoulder injury.
Williams got through with a win over the Slovak, Dominika Cibulkova, rated ninth in the world, 6:3, 6:3 in an hour.
