MOSCOW, January 13 (R-Sport) – Alex Bogomolov Jr.'s Australian Open ended abruptly Monday as the Russian tennis player retired hurt midway through his first-round match against Fabio Fognini.
Bogomolov, ranked 89, had racked up 46 unforced errors before throwing in the towel two sets down to the 15th-seeded Italian with the score at 6-3, 6-2. The nature of the injury was not immediately clear.
Bogomolov's best result in Melbourne is reaching round two in 2006 and 2012. Fognini, meanwhile, goes on to play Jarkko Nieminen in round two after the Finn triumphed over Israel's Dude Sela in an epic comeback 3-6, 6(3)-7, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-3.
The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam of the year and runs through January 13.
