MOSCOW, January 14 (RIA Novosti) – A bill introducing life imprisonment for anyone convicted of funding terrorism will be submitted to the Russian parliament on Wednesday, a lawmaker said Tuesday.
Andrei Lugovoi, a member of the nationalist LDPR party, said the bill was prepared by a group of lawmakers from various factions as part of a broader package of anti-terrorism initiatives.
The bill stipulates that punishments for certain terrorism-related charges will be toughened from 10 years to 20, and “life imprisonment will be introduced for a number of [terrorism-related] crimes,” he said.
The bill would also scrap the statute of limitations for terrorism-related crimes and make terrorism convicts ineligible for deferred sentencing.
