MOSCOW, January 22 (RIA Novosti) – A Muscovite who tried to purchase US military-grade rifle sights dodged a lengthy sentence and a hefty fine for illegal arms exports in the United States, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

A federal judge in the US state of Wyoming slapped Roman Kvinikadze, 32, with a fine of $7,500 and ordered him to leave the country within 10 days, the report said.

The Russian, who pleaded guilty, had been facing up to 20 years behind bars and a fine of $1 million.

Kvinikadze tried to purchase 3,000 thermal rifle sights, which allow users to see their target in the dark, from an undercover Department of Homeland Security agent last year.

The sights, which cost about $10,000 each, are intended for use by security services and cannot be exported without a federal permit, a rule that Kvinikadze chose to overlook, according to the court.
