The torch was carried by two local alpinists, Karina Mezova and Abdul-Khakim Elmezov, who made the climb before the onset of insurmountable winter weather.
The torch has also been carried by Russians to the North Pole and in Earth orbit during a spacewalk by cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station.
The torch was lit after the climbers summited the mountain.
