YAKUTSK, February 6 (RIA Novosti) – A team of scientists that includes a Japanese researcher was stuck in the Siberian taiga Thursday as temperatures dropped below -50 degrees Celsius (-58 degrees Fahrenheit), rescuers said.
The scientists used a satellite phone to call for rescue after the engine of their SUV shut off about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the nearest settlement in Russia’s scarcely populated Siberian Republic of Yakutia.
“They said the engine of their car stopped and they are running low on fuel,” a spokesman for the local emergencies service said.
Residents of a nearby village and a team of rescuers are currently discussing ways to rescue the stranded team.
