ASTANA/MOSCOW, February 12 (RIA Novosti) – A senior Kazakhstan defense official has been arrested on suspicion of large-scale bribery, a military court in the country said Wednesday.
The court ordered Deputy Defense Minister General Bagdat Maikeyev to remain in detention until February 20 on suspicion of accepting a large sum of money as a bribe.
The Kazinform news agency, citing KTK news channel, reported that Maikeyev was found with two million dollars in cash at the time of his detention on February 9, which investigators said was a bribe from businessmen taking part in a military procurement tender.
If charged and convicted, Maikeyev faces up to 15 years in prison.
Two other generals, Askar Buldeshov and Almaz Asenov, were arrested in the country on corruption charges in separate cases last year.
