MOSCOW, March 6 (RIA Novosti) – Interpol said on Thursday it had received a request from Ukrainian authorities to issue a so-called Red Notice, or an international wanted persons alert, for its fugitive President Victor Yanukovych.
“The request, received on Wednesday 5 March 2014, is being assessed by Interpol’s Office of Legal Affairs to determine whether it conforms with the Organization’s constitution and rules,” the organization said in a statement.
The fugitive leader, who resurfaced in Russia days after being impeached in his home country, is wanted “on charges including abuse of power and murder,” the French-based international police agency said.
An Interpol Red Notice informs its member countries that an arrest warrant has been issued for an individual by a national judicial authority. It is not a full equivalent to an international arrest warrant, and Interpol cannot arrest Red Notice subject or compel any member country to do this.
Only national authorities of the Interpol member country where the wanted person is located have the legal authority to perform an arrest.
