MOSCOW, March 13 (RIA Novosti) – A group of armed men attempted to rob a bank in downtown Kiev on Thursday allegedly owned by the wealthy son of Ukraine’s ousted president, the Ukrainian UNIAN news agency has reported.

Some 20 masked men with Kalashnikov rifles broke into the UkrBusinessBank on Wednesday night, threatening guards and trying to gain access to the vault.

One of the guards was released, while the others were locked in a room.

The armed robbery suspects eventually surrendered peacefully after negotiations with police, the agency reported.

UkrBusinessBank is believed to be owned by Oleksandr Yanukovych, a former dentist, who became one of the richest men in Ukraine during his father’s time in office. Until 2010, the bank was headed by Serhiy Arbuzov, who was appointed interim prime minister by Yanukovych.
