These polar bears at the Novosibirsk Zoo, Kai and Gerda, have recently become parents. This is a very important event for the zoo because no baby polar bears have been born here in the last 50 years. The mother recently showed off her baby to visitors for the first time.
The mother bear doesn’t allow the baby to stray away from her during their first walks together. The little cub was only born in December, and is still quite small. When the cub is 12 months old, it will be a little smaller than its mother.
Zoo attendants say that Kai, who is especially social, misses visitors during the winter. Now that the ice has partially melted in the pool, which is part of the bears’ enclosure, Kai swims and plays in the water to his heart’s content.
A plastic canister is his favorite toy. Sometimes, Kai uses it to play “football” with the visitors. He tosses the canister from the enclosure and waits for people to throw it back inside.
The people of Novosibirsk will choose the name of the little polar bear during a competition, which is due to be organized soon by the zoo.
