MOSCOW, April 3 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow tops the list of the cheapest European destination for Americans, according to US-based website priceoftravel.com, which analyzed flight prices to Europe from the largest cities in the US and Canada.
"The price of passenger transportation is one of the major factors of the price of tourism for Americans. Their decision on whether or not to take a trip heavily depends on [the price of air travel]," said Sergey Shpilko, the head of the Moscow Committee on Tourism and the Hotel Industry.
"Moscow grabbing the first place in the rankings will definitely motivate many tourists from the US and Canada to visit our city," he added.
The average price for airfare to the Russian capital came to $920, which let Moscow sidestep its closest rivals, Dubai ($952) and Oslo ($972). The most expensive cities for American tourists to fly to were Prague ($1,097), Munich ($1,101) and Athens ($1,183).
Moscow also maintains the lead as the cheapest European destination from two major cities: New York ($700) and Los Angeles ($919). A ticket from Chicago to the Russian capital in May to August averages $969, from Houston $935, from Atlanta $1,117 and from Toronto $880.
