Fremaux named Ukraine’s Sergei Loznitsa as the director of the forthcoming documentary on the protests on the central square of the Ukrainian capital, known as Maidan.

Eighteen films will compete for the top Palme d'Or prize at the festival. Among them are “Leviathan” by Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev, “The Captive” by Atom Egoyan and Dardennes' “Two Days, One Night,” starring Marion Cotillard.

A number of other films will make an appearance, including David Cronenberg's “Maps to the Stars,” “Adieu au Langage” (“Goodbye to Language”) by Jean-Luc Godard and the Tommy Lee Jones-directed drama “The Homesman.”

The 67th annual Cannes Film Festival will take place in Cannes, France, on May 14-25. New Zealand director Jane Campion will be the head of the jury for the main competition.
