WASHINGTON, April 21 (RIA Novosti) – A White House website petition demanding US authorities recognize the legitimate expression of the will of the Crimean people, who voted for reunification with Russia last month, received less than three thousand votes and thus will not be accepted for consideration.
The petition was posted on the White House’s website March 22. The authors of the petition, which was signed by 2,727 people, also demanded the US government recognize the illegality of the armed coup in Ukraine at the end of February, and bring its participants to trial in international court as perpetrators of crimes against humanity.
For US authorities to formally respond to a petition, it must receive no less than 100 thousand signatures within a month.
A referendum on the status of Crimea was held on March 16, with more than 96 percent of citizens voting for reunification with Russia. On March 18, Crimea and Moscow signed an agreement on reunification, providing for the republic of Crimea and the city of Sevatopol to enter into the Russian Federation.
