MOSCOW, May 7 (RIA Novosti) – Checkpoints held by protesters around Ukraine’s restive eastern city of Slaviansk came under mortar fire Wednesday as the Kiev regime’s army launched an onslaught against the federalist stronghold, a spokesman for the city’s self-defense forces told RIA Novosti.
“The Andreevsky roadblock … is currently under mortar fire,” the spokesman said, adding there was not yet any information on the number of casualties.
The attack broke a lull in fighting since the morning.
A correspondent with RIA Novosti earlier visited a roadblock manned by self-defense forces and said the military had been letting small groups of civilians out of the besieged city after checking if they were carrying weapons.
Local media reported Tuesday that the Ukrainian army had deployed rocket artillery systems near the city of Slaviansk in preparation for an imminent attack on pockets of resistance held by pro-federalization activists.
