MOSCOW, May 23 (RIA Novosti) – A new multipolar system of international relations should be built on respect for mutual interests, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, speaking at the Moscow International Security Conference Friday.
“President Vladimir Putin recently underlined that Russian-Chinese cooperation should be taken as a role model for international relations, based on respect for mutual interests and effective work to the benefit of their nations and the whole international community,” Lavrov said.
“The new polycentric system of international relations should be built on the same foundation in all its aspects, including cooperation on regional stability,” he added.
According to the Russian foreign minister, coordinating on crisis reconciliation should play a positive role in this process.
“We mean acknowledgement of the UN’s main responsibility to maintain peace and security in the world, based on the basic principles of international law, protection of civilians and recognition of interests of all sides of the conflict,” Lavrov said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry earlier criticized its Western partners for their one-sided position on the Ukrainian crisis, urging the US and EU to take into account the interests of all parties involved, including citizens of southeastern regions of Ukraine, instead of blindly supporting every move of the Kiev authorities.
