Japan is ready to assist the new administration in Ukraine in political and economic reform, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference in Tokyo on Monday.

TOKYO, May 26 (RIA Novosti) – Japan is ready to assist the new administration in Ukraine in political and economic reform, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference in Tokyo on Monday.

“The presidential elections, with the exception of the eastern regions, were mostly held in a peaceful atmosphere, according to preliminary data of the central election committee, the turnout was 61%. We know the results of exit-polls, but we are expecting the final results of the vote. In any case, we look forward to the early formation of the democratically elected administration. Our country will assist the new administration in the political and economic reform," Chief Cabinet Secretary said.

He noted that ten observers from Japan followed the Ukrainian presidential elections and the Government intends to wait for their report on the conduct of the elections. According to Suga, Japan will take the decision to recognize the legitimacy of the election after the announcement of the official results and the report of the country’s observers.

Ukraine saw a presidential election on Sunday. The voter turnout at the presidential election in 186 constituencies was registered at 60.36 percent as of 8:00 pm local time (1700 GMT).

The Lviv region saw the maximum voter turnout (78.2 percent).

The Donetsk region has the lowest voter turnout (15.37 percent).

Voter turnout in the neighboring Luhansk region was 38.94 percent.

The voter turnout in the Odessa and Kharkiv regions was 46.01 and 48.12 percent, respectively.
