Tycoon Poroshenko Gets Most Support in Ukraine’s West, Unpopular in East

Ukrainian tycoon Petro Poroshenko, who leads in Ukraine’s presidential election, gained the maximum support in the western Lviv region (69 percent) and the lowest level support (31 percent) in the eastern Luhansk region, the director of the legal department of Poroshenko’s campaign headquarters said Monday.

KIEV, May 26 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian tycoon Petro Poroshenko, who leads in Ukraine’s presidential election, gained the maximum support in the western Lviv region (69 percent) and the lowest level support (31 percent) in the eastern Luhansk region, the director of the legal department of Poroshenko’s campaign headquarters said Monday.

According to the headquarters’ preliminary results, Poroshenko received 67 percent of the votes in the Vinnytsia region, 65 percent in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, 61 or 62 percent in the Zakarpattia and the Ternopil regions, and 62 percent in Kiev and the region.

Poroshenko received the lowest support in the eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk (31 percent) and Donetsk region (37 percent), Roman Zvarych said.

With 40.06 percent of ballots counted in the Ukrainian presidential election, billionaire Petro Poroshenko leads the race with 54.09 percent of the vote, Ukraine’s Central Election Commission said Monday.

The voter turnout at the presidential election in 186 constituencies was registered at 60.36 percent as of 8:00 pm local time (1700 GMT). The Lviv region saw the maximum voter turnout (78.2 percent). The Donetsk region has the lowest voter turnout (15.37 percent). Voter turnout in the neighboring Luhansk region was 38.94 percent. The voter turnout in the Odessa and Kharkiv regions was 46.01 and 48.12 percent, respectively.

The May 25 early presidential vote as well as regional elections came amid a large-scale military operation launched by the new Kiev authorities to crack down on protesters refusing to recognize the legitimacy of the government.
