MOSCOW, May 27 (RIA Novosti) - Having passed all the tests, a supercomputer nicknamed "Lobachevsky" can demonstrate a performance of 600 teraflops.
It is only the second most powerful supercomputer installed at a Russian university after MSU's "Lomonosov".
This complex equipment was provided by UNN's partner - one of the leading companies in the world - Niagara Computers, said UNN Vice-Rector Nikita Avralev.
The USA and Europe have been leading the way in creation, storage, processing, and management of data using supercomputers. However, today, having realized that it is only with superior information technology that it can become the leading power in the world, Russia has begun its ascend to the leading positions in the world, suggests the Dean of the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics, Director of the Center for Computer Modeling, Doctor of Technology Viktor Gergel. That's why UNN established a specialized laboratory for implementing supercomputer research in the fields of biomedicine and plasma physics.
Devices and systems nowadays are becoming more and more complex, which is why their full-scale production can become quite a costly undertaking. It is much easier to test their reliability using preliminary calculations made on a digital model, he says. University researchers work on a large variety of programming applications of supercomputing for bioinformatics, for example, creating models of human brain, heart, processing the tomography images. The students work on engineering applications of supercomputing, for example, railroad schedule planning, air-cushion ship design, etc. Without this instrument, there will be no progress either in research or in production.
"Lobachevsky" will become one of the top-50 most powerful supercomputers in the world, claims the Research Director of the Department of Supercomputer Technology of UNN Alexander Pukhov. Among other applications, it will be used to model processes in the field of particle acceleration. As of today, approximately 200 mln roubles were invested in the project.
