MOSCOW, May 28 (RIA Novosti) – Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s likely president-elect, must stop the punitive operation in the southeast of the country to “break the vicious circle of lawlessness,” Russian presidential aide Sergei Glazyev told RIA Novosti Wednesday.

“The only thing that Poroshenko could do to break this vicious circle of lawlessness in Ukraine is to stop using military force and that punitive operation against the most urbanized region of Ukraine,” Glazyev said.

The official underlined that it would be an easy task for the president-elect.

“Unfortunately, Poroshenko now demonstrates directly opposite intentions. He calls on the troops to escalate the violence. According to the reports we are getting, Poroshenko ordered on May 29-30 to complete the operation at any cost, including using aviation, bombardments, heavy artillery against the cities and residents of Donbas,” Glazyev said.

The presidential aide added that if Poroshenko indeed participates in such a crime, “there are no doubts that he will face court-martial together with other criminals against humanity and the nation of Ukraine.”

Glazyev believes that Poroshenko is trapped by “three illegitimacies: the illegitimate junta, which brought him to power, the illegitimate elections that named him the president and the illegitimate use of military force against people.”

Ukraine went to the polls on Sunday amid a deep political crisis and large-scale military operation launched by Kiev’s authorities mid-April to crack down on pro-federalization supporters in the southeast of the country. According to the Central Election Commission, billionaire Petro Poroshenko leads the race leaving his main rival former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko far behind with only 12.82 percent of votes.
