Ukraine’s Border Service chief Mykola Lytvyn has confirmed the ongoing withdrawal of Russian troops from Russian regions bordering Ukraine.

KIEV, May 28 (RIA Novosti) – Ukraine’s Border Service chief Mykola Lytvyn has confirmed the ongoing withdrawal of Russian troops from Russian regions bordering Ukraine.

“We have information that troops are being pulled away from the state border. Reconnaissance, radio communication and interception units have fallen behind,” Lytvyn said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The border guard authority said logistic support infrastructure had also lingered at the sites of Russian encampments along the Ukrainian border, adding the pullout was likely to take more time.

“But the process has begun … echelons are moving back deep into Russia,” Lytvyn told journalists.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said last Wednesday he had ordered the return of the troops from regions bordering Ukraine ahead of the presidential election on May 25. NATO, however, had repeatedly claimed that it saw no signs of withdrawal.
