KIEV, May 30 (RIA Novosti) – Self-defense forces have destroyed the Ukrainian Army ammunition depot in Oleksandrivsk, a city in the eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk region, the National Guard said on the website Friday.
“The gun battle is over. One rocket-propelled grenade, fired by [militia] targeted an ammunition depot. As a result of the blast, the weapons and ammunition were destroyed,” the statement said.
No one was injured in the incident.
On Thursday, self-defense forces arrived at a military base in Oleksandrivsk in an effort to launch talks with the servicemen. A shootout started later and one of grenades hit the ammunition depot, resulting in a powerful explosion and fire.
Luhansk self-defense forces announced Thursday they had taken captive 20 soldiers of Ukraine’s National Guard and took control of the military base. No casualties were reported.
The Ukrainian security operation in southeastern Ukraine is continuing despite a memorandum on peace and accord adopted by the parliament ahead of the May 25 presidential vote. The operation has killed scores of people on both sides.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier that Ukraine must immediately move to stop violence and launch nationwide dialogue following presidential vote in the country.
