LUHANSK, June 10 (RIA Novosti) – Approximately 2,000 gunmen with Ukraine’s National Guard have been stationed at the Luhansk airport in the country’s east, an independence supporter told RIA Novosti Tuesday.

“The enemy’s major forces are at the airport. There are around 2,000 people and a large number of armored vehicles and other weapons,” the independence supporter said.

Last night, independence supporters opened fire on the airport, using grenade launchers and mortar launchers. No casualties have been reported.

The independence supporter said last week several military aircraft arrived at the airport. In the past several days, no aircraft has landed in the area. “They may be afraid of anti-aircraft fire,” he said.

The airport was hit by a blast several days ago that destroyed a building which controls the power supply to the airport. The independence supporters said they are not conducting any armed activity at that moment.

Last week, Ukrainian security forces launched two airstrikes on Luhansk. The first shot targeted the occupied administration building in downtown, while the second hit a roadblock in the suburbs. According to the region’s officials, the attackers used cluster bombs that have been banned by an international convention.
