The human rights situation in Ukraine is to be discussed at the 26th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which started on June 10 in Geneva and will continue through June 27, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

MOSCOW, June 11 (RIA Novosti) – The human rights situation in Ukraine is to be discussed at the 26th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which started on June 10 in Geneva and will continue through June 27, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

“In the course of the session, Russia will propose a series of initiatives, including against arbitrary termination of citizenship, against abuse of Roma rights, and one to support family values. We also plan to discuss the human rights situation in Ukraine with the participation of NGOs and journalists, the victims of Ukraine’s security services,” the statement published Wednesday on the ministry’s official website said.

There will also be joint statements by Collective Security Treaty Organization member countries “related to the anniversary of the beginning of [World War II] and the role of mass media in the digital age.”

The Russian delegation has positively assessed the work of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pilay, who will soon leave her post. At the opening session she expressed concern over the human rights situation in several countries, including the United States and Ukraine.

“We stressed that continuing mass and severe abuse of human rights in Ukraine condoned by Kiev authorities should not be tolerated while the crimes perpetuated by 'National Guard' and Ukrainian Armed Forces in the southeast of the country need to be investigated in detail,” the statement read.

Starting from mid-April, Kiev authorities are conducting a punitive operation to suppress independence supporters in the east of the country. Moscow has repeatedly called for Kiev to stop this punitive operation, which has already led to multiple casualties on both sides, including civilians.
