KIEV, June 18 (RIA Novosti) – Ukraine’s former ruling Party of Regions has called on President Petro Poroshenko to initiate talks with the Russian leadership in an effort to resolve the situation in the country’s east, a people’s deputy said Wednesday.
“We believe that President Poroshenko still has to sit down at the negotiating table with the Russian president. And we call for joint control of the Russian-Ukrainian border,” Anna German told reporters.
“We demand the president initiate these talks at the highest level,” she added.
In early June, the newly elected Ukrainian president introduced a peace plan to resolve the crisis calling for ceasefire after the security forces restore control on the border with Russia.
President Poroshenko said the term for the ceasefire would be short. Those who decide to lay down arms and have committed no serious crimes will be granted amnesty.
Last week, Poroshenko informed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a phone conversation of his plan to resolve the crisis in Ukraine. The presidents discussed the issues of developing bilateral ties.
