MOSCOW, June 19 (RIA Novosti) – Kiev’s unilateral demarcation of the Russian-Ukrainian border can never be legally binding, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Thursday.
“We still expect the Ukrainian authorities to reject the idea of taking practical measures to unilaterally demarcate the border in breach of existing international obligations,” the spokesman said.
“In accordance with the established international practices, the demarcation of the state border is a bilateral process that involves two bordering states, that’s why a unilateral demarcation can never be legally binding for the other party and will thus never fulfill its primary objective,” Lukashevich added.
Ukraine’s parliament approved a resolution Tuesday paving the way for the unilateral demarcation of the country’s border with Russia. The resolution, which envisions the preparation of all the necessary documents within a month, was backed by 261 lawmakers in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament.
The parliament instructed the cabinet to take immediate steps to suspend the work of crossing points on the borders with Russia and Moldova’s breakaway republic of Transdniestria.
Lawmakers have also approved the allocation of additional funds to improve infrastructure and increase the number of border guards on the Ukrainian-Russian border.
