MOSCOW, June 20 (RIA Novosti) – During his upcoming visit to the Russian capital, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will discuss the possibility of convening a peace conference on the Middle East in Moscow, Azzam Ahmad, chief negotiator for Abbas' Fatah party, told the International News Agency Rossiya Segodnya on Friday.
“It is necessary to hold the conference on the Middle East in Moscow as soon as possible. The Palestinian president will visit [Moscow] to discuss Moscow Middle East conference,” Ahmad said.
Abbas and the Russian delegation will also discuss the development of bilateral ties, Azzam Ahmad added.
“However, the main goal of Moscow talks is to discuss further steps toward resuming negotiations on the establishment of the State of Palestine. The US and the EU are now also working on it, but we specifically count on Russia. The US tried to take a leading role in this process, but they failed,” Abbas aide added.
A month ago, the Russian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed the country was ready to assist in renewing dialogue between Israel and Palestine in order to achieve a Middle Eastern peace settlement.
The latest attempt to revive talks between Israel and Palestine was launched by the US last year, but by its conclusion in April it had produced no results.
