WASHINGTON, July 1 (RIA Novosti) – American non-profit organization Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called to investigate the death of the cameraman from Russia’s Channel-1 television station, Anatoly Klyan, fatally shot in Donetsk Region.
"The killing of Anatoly Klyan underscores that eastern Ukraine remains extremely dangerous for journalists despite reports of dialogue between Ukrainian and Russian leaders," CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova said in a statement.
"We urge Ukrainian authorities to carry out a swift and transparent investigation into Klyan's death," the statement said.
Anatoly Klyan was killed late on June 29 night by gunfire while traveling by bus with a group of other journalists outside of Donetsk.
“Press freedom conditions in Ukraine, especially in the volatile southeastern regions, have steadily deteriorated in recent months, CPJ research shows. Journalists and news outlets continue to be targeted by all sides of the conflict," CPJ statement said.
On June 17, two Russian journalists were killed in a mortar attack near the Ukrainian city of Luhansk.
According to the Reporters Without Borders, more than 200 journalists have been injured or attacked in Ukraine since the start of the year.
