MOSCOW, July 15 (RIA Novosti) - The United States has deported 21 Honduran children and their mothers to San Pedro Sula, a city that is said to be the world’s most violent, Time magazine reported Tuesday.
“It is a brutal place. There are gang members with rifles and grenades. I am scared to go out of my house a lot of the time,” Honduran First Lady Ana Garcia de Hernandez told the Time.
This was the first flight full of children deportees sent back to the most impoverished country in Central America by US authorities.
“These are people coming home with a broken heart and a broken dream,” de Hernandez added.
In the coming weeks the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is going to charter dozens more of such flights, sending children back to Central American countries, Time reported.
Only in 2013, more than 20,000 unaccompanied Central American minors travelled to the United States in search for a better life, according to a study conducted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The largest number comes from Honduras, which is the deadliest country in the world outside a war zone. The Insight Crime organization’s research shows the shocking numbers – 86 killings per 100,000 people in the country.
The United States has the worst record of child abuse in the industrialized world. According to the UNICEF figures, more than 20,000 children were killed by their own family members in the past decade in the United States. There are many well-known cases of adopted children being abused by their American parents, leading to widespread criticism from international human rights organizations.
