UNITED NATIONS, July 16 (RIA Novosti) – Members of the UN Security Council on Wednesday said they were alarmed by reports of warring parties in South Sudan acquiring weapons, which they stressed violated a previous accord.
The Council said it was “alarmed by information both parties [are] recruiting and acquiring weapons in violation of the agreement of June 10."
The agreement was reached in negotiations led by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development in Addis Ababa between the government of South Sudan and the SPLM in Opposition.
The Security Council said they "stand ready to consider appropriate measure in consultation with the countries of the region against those who will not implement their commitments to peace in South Sudan.”
Speaking about aid to South Sudan, the Security Council “members further expressed deep concern deterioration of the situation, which has put 1 million under threat of famine.”
Turning to Sudan, from which South Sudan gained its independence three years ago, the Security Council on Wednesday “expressed deep concern about the security and humanitarian situation in Sudanese states of Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile.”
The Council “urged warring parties to engage in direct dialogue without preconditions and allow humanitarian access in accordance with Resolution 2046” adopted by the Security Council, more than two years ago.
The Republic of South Sudan gained its independence from Sudan in 2011. In December 2013, a political power struggle broke out between President Kiir and his ex-deputy Machar, as the president accused Machar of attempting a coup.
More than 800,000 people have been displaced inside South Sudan and more than 250,000 people have fled to neighboring countries, especially Kenya, Sudan, and Uganda, as a result of the conflict, according to the UN report published in March.
