MOSCOW, July 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova won the Best Female Tennis Player category at the 22nd annual Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) award show, organized by American sports channel ESPN on July 16.
This is Sharapova’s fifth ESPY award in the category after her previous four in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2012. In 2013 the award went to American tennis player Serena Williams.
Most recently, Sharapova earned her second victory at the Roland-Garros championship, held from May 25 to June 8 in France. The Russian tennis star is currently ranked No. 6 by Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
Spain’s Rafael Nadal was voted best tennis player among men.
The ESPY awards were introduced in 1993 to recognize individual and team athletic achievements over the span of a year.
