MOSCOW, July (RIA Novosti) – The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is gathering facts on the tragic crash of a Malaysian airliner in eastern Ukraine to determine its role in the investigation of the crash cause, an OSCE Ukraine spokesman told RIA Novosti Thursday.
“We are gathering facts and trying to determine our role over next hours or days,” said Michael Bociurkiw, the spokesperson for the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine.
Bociurkiw talked about the difficulties linked to conducting a probe in a combat zone. He said the mission had “small numbers of monitors in the region but not close to the reported crash site" near the boder with Russia.
“Also the reported site is in an unsecured area,” the spokesman added.
A Malaysia Airlines Boeing-777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed near the city of Donetsk on Thursday. There were at least 280 passengers, including 23 US citizens, and 15 crew members on board.
