GAZA, July 21 (RIA Novosti) – Israel’s military operation in the Gaza Strip killed more than100 Palestinians on Sunday, the bloodiest day since the fighting broke out two weeks ago, local medics said.
Over 60 people were killed in Israel’s artillery shelling of the Shejaiya district east of Gaza City.
A total of 436 Palestinians have been killed and another 3,000 wounded since the Israeli operation began.
Over 83,000 Palestinians have been displaced and found shelter in 61 centers under the UN auspices, said Chris Gunness, a spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.
On Sunday, Israeli military suffered the biggest loss since the 2006 Second Lebanese War. A total of 13 Israeli soldiers were killed in clashes Sunday, bringing the total death toll to 20, of which two people are civilians.
Palestinian gunmen continue launching rocket attacks on southern and central Israel. For the first time in the past two weeks, the number of rockets fired from Gaza on Sunday stood at 87, and 16 of them were intercepted, the Israeli Army press service said.
Israel started its Operation Protective Edge on July 8 targeting the Hamas movement controlling the region and its allied groups of Palestinian rebels. Ten days later, the Israeli military switched to a ground offensive aimed at destroying underground tunnels dug by rebels to secretly enter the Israeli territory.
