MOSCOW, July 24 (RIA Novosti) – Moscow Metro refused to comment on different theories behind the causes of the recent derailment on the dark blue Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line and urged to wait for the results of the investigation.
“We will not conjecture the causes; we need to wait for the results of the investigation,” representative of the Moscow Metro press service told RIA Novosti on Thursday, adding that the subway’s utility systems, trains and personnel have been checked and that no violations were detected.
Several explanations for the crash appeared in the media and social networks over the past few weeks but Moscow authorities currently stand by the theory that the incorrect installation of a cable caused it to snap in a rail junction switch. Both the city’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and the new head of Moscow Metro Dmitry Pegov repeatedly stressed that the derailment happened not due to the technical bugs but because of the lack of discipline by certain employees.
The official cause of the crash has not been determined yet. Four people were arrested in connection with the accident, including a rail engineer and his assistant.
On July 15 the deadliest accident in Moscow Metro’s history occurred inside a tunnel between the Molodezhnaya and Slavyansky Bulvar stations after three subway cars derailed when a train suddenly halted. The crash left 23 dead and 161 injured.
