MOSCOW, July 26 (RIA Novosti) – Regions of the North Caucasus Federal District have accommodated about 6,500 Ukrainian refugees, the federal center is to reimburse the regional authorities for the expenses and to allocate means for the maintenance of refugees already in early August, Russia’s Ministry of Regional Development said Saturday.
“[Sergei] Melikov [Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District] told the head of the Ministry of Regional Development that currently about 6,500 Ukrainian refugees have been accommodated in North Caucasian republics and the Stavropol Region, more than a half of them have been sheltered by the families of their friends and relatives, while up to 3,000 stay in temporary accommodation centers,” the ministry reported following the results of the meeting between Melikov and Regional Development Minister Igor Slyunyaev.
According to Melikov, the Stavropol Region is facing the largest flow of refugees – up to 4,000.
Slyunyaev said that the ministry has started admitting application for federal financing from the regions sheltering refugees from Ukraine.
Earlier on Saturday, the Russian Emergencies Ministry reported that the number of Ukrainian refugees that remain in temporary accommodation centers across Russia had exceeded 31,000, increasing by 4,600 over the past 24 hours.
