MOSCOW, July 29 (RIA Novosti) – An adopted boy who was sent back to Russia by his US family is going back to the United States, Russian children’s rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov said Tuesday.
Last month, Astakhov reported another notorious case when a Russian adoptee was abandoned by his adoptive parents. The teenager was sent to his previous residence in Karelia, in northwest Russia, without any livelihood and ended up on the street.
“The Russian boy earlier adopted by a US couple and sent back to Russia by his adoptive father with a “one-way ticket” has filed all the necessary documents with the US Consulate General and the Federal Migration Service in the Republic of Karelia and has departed for the United States,” he said.
“I hope he will receive a warm welcome and he’ll be fine and better than before,” Astakhov said in a post on Instagram.
The family from Iowa adopted the boy in 2006, but sent him to a special institution after realized they failed to build good relations with the boy who also had problems studying at a local school. When their adoptive son turned 18, the parents asked him to either take a loan for college, or to go back to Russia.
Last year Russia banned US adoptions, citing the unwillingness by the United States to cooperate in the investigation of cases of child abuse as well as soft sentences passed by US courts to people convicted of cruel treatment of adopted Russian orphans.
