MOSCOW, July 29 (RIA Novosti) – The top diplomats of Russia and the United States agreed in a phone conversation Tuesday that the UN Security Council resolution, demanding an independent investigation into the plane crash in eastern Ukraine, must be strictly observed.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry “agreed that provisions of the UN Security Council Resolution 2166, demanding to ensure a truly international and independent investigation into the Malaysian Boeing plane crash and to cease hostilities in the crash zone, must be strictly observed,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“Sergei Lavrov confirmed that the UN Security Council should closely monitor compliance with these provisions,” the statement said.
The Russian top diplomats also exchanged views on control over weapons, including the commitment to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) that was signed in 1987.
The United States claims that Russia violated INF treaty by testing a prohibited ground-launched cruise missile, The New York Times reported Monday citing senior US officials.
Igor Korotchenko, Editor-in-Chief with the National Defense magazine, said Tuesday Russia has never violated the INF treaty, unlike the United States, which has repeatedly ignored the provisions of this document while running anti-missile tests.
